Attic Surfing!

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

In my quest for the ultimate adventure - I’ve stumbled onto a new sport that is sure to be a hit…see what you think….

We just sold our house. And last week while getting our house ready for an upcoming home inspection, Missy asked me to check out the attic and see if I could clean out some lint. Our dryer for some unknown reason (I guess it was ok in 1987) vents into the attic and doesn’t quite vent outside. Well I went up there…and I’ve never been in an attic in my 33 years so far on this planet. I know. I know. But I don’t want to hear it…some of you can probably already guess where this is headed.

I had no idea you were only supposed to walk on the beams. I took 2 steps and fell completely through to our top level. I landed on my ass in a very narrow hallway (about 2 1/2 feet wide) leading from Zak’s room to our master bedroom. The 8-foot hole I crashed through was directly over the banister and another couple of inches I could have had a serious boo-boo going down a flight of stairs. I’m sure it wouldn’t be so fun! I was pretty lucky…and as I lay there covered in pink insulation I though ‘This is a perfect example of why I always pay experts anytime there’s something that needs to be fixed in the house’. ;)

Here are 2 pics I snapped (the angle is little off and it looks like there is almost no way possible I could have landed in the hallway - but the hole is directly above this banister so I could have went either way):

Anyway since I’ve had time to reflect back on this - there might be a sport here. We cover the floor underneath the attic with mattresses or foam padding. Then you just dive anywhere you want in the attic. Well…ok maybe not!

Be safe out there…and stay out of attics!
